Flathive vs Roomies.ca vs Kijiji vs Craigslist vs Facebook Marketplace: How Canada's Roommate Sites Compare

Roomies.ca, Kijiji, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are where most Canadians have looked for a room or a roommate for years. Flathive is the newcomer — already running in Australia and New Zealand, and now launching in Canada. Here's a feature-by-feature look at what each one actually offers, including where Flathive is still catching up.

This comparison is based on each platform's own website and help pages, plus Canadian police and news reporting on rental scams, checked in October 2026. Where a feature wasn't advertised anywhere we could find, it's marked "not shown" rather than assumed absent.

This comparison is based on publicly available information from each platform's own website and help pages, and on public reporting, gathered in good faith. Features and policies change, and mistakes are possible — treat it as a starting point, not the final word, and confirm anything important directly with the platform.

Where Flathive pulls ahead

Team up and rent the whole place together. Found a three-bedroom you can't afford alone? Start a group for it, name it and tag it ("Students", "Professionals", "Women only"), and approve the people who ask to join. Once the group is set, everyone adds their own details to one joint application — pre-filled from their roommate profile — and the group sends it to the landlord, who approves or declines in one place and can then message each of you. Everyone in the group gets a private group chat. None of the other four show anything like it: on classifieds sites, a group has to coordinate in a side chat and apply one person at a time.

Compare places before you message anyone. Pick up to four rooms and see them side by side: the rent, the bills and what it will actually cost you to live there each month, plus privacy, facilities and what's around each place — with a score for each so the trade-offs are easy to spot. On Roomies.ca, Kijiji, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace you open listings one at a time and keep the comparison in your head (or a spreadsheet).

Scam checks built in, not just warnings. Canadian police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre keep warning about rental scams on classifieds and Facebook — fake landlords, copied photos, deposits demanded before a viewing. Flathive runs AI-based scam detection on new conversations and flags suspicious messages, instead of leaving you to spot them yourself.

Privacy-first photos. You control who sees your photos — blur them so only verified users, or only people you're actually messaging, can see you clearly, instead of every visitor or every member of a public group.

Look around the room in 360°. Upload a 360° panorama like any other photo, and renters can look around the actual room instead of guessing from a few flat shots.

Actual live chat. Conversations happen in real time — not an email relay you check later, or a Messenger thread mixed in with everything else.

Search in your own words. Describe the room you want in plain language and Flathive's AI search sets the filters for you.

Findable from inside ChatGPT, and property management once you're in. Listings are searchable through a ChatGPT connector (still in developer preview), and Flathive includes property management tools for running a shared home — not just finding one.

Where the others are ahead

Worth being upfront about: audience size. Kijiji, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace have been the default places to look for a room in Canada for years, and their reach is something a newer platform like Flathive is still building — today there are far fewer Canadian listings on Flathive than on any of them. If sheer volume matters most, you'll likely see more listings there; the trade-off is weaker verification and more scam exposure. Roomies.ca's required mobile verification is a genuine safety step too. And government-ID verification, which Flathive offers in Australia and New Zealand, isn't available in Canada yet.
